Roche Angling Club Junior Fish-in May 19th 2008
On Monday 19th June eight young anglers accompanied by their parents gathered at the regenerated Walden Pond on the RAC complex for an introduction to the watery world of angling, and what an introduction it turned out to be!
The group assembled in the sunshine and following a quick introduction to the five volunteer coaches for the evening, teams made their way to their pegs. However, before many could even get their lines in the water head coach for the evening Andy Endean provided everyone with a proper treat hooking and landing a large Walden common carp off the surface. All the anglers and parents where taken through a demonstration of fish care, an explanation of the major fish parts followed by a team photo with the fish. If anything could fire the enthusiasm for a lifetime of fishing I think seeing that carp did!
With the fish safely returned we set about catching a few fish and it wasn’t long before the first shrieks were heard as small roach, rudd and perch were swung into hand. Despite suffering a blank 20 minutes a young angler by the name of Dan persevered and was rewarded with a tell-tale slide away bite on the float. It could only be a carp, and unfortunately the light pole and elastic was no match for what was a very large fish. The pole bent alarmingly, elastic snapped in dramatic style and Dan already had a tale of “the one that got away”! Good job his mum was there to see it, she might never have believed it.
By the end of the two hours everyone had caught fish and although many would have stayed and fished all night it was time to pack up. The evening was a resounding success and more will follow this summer.
The evening wouldn’t have been possible without the recent support of the Environment Agency and Restormel Borough Council both of which have provided the Club with funding which has been a catalyst for a regeneration project around a number of the Club’s waters not least Waldon Pond.
Keep an eye on the forum and the web site for details of future events.
Huge thanks must go to the young anglers for being great company, the parents from bringing them along and to the RAC members who contributed to a wonderful evening.
